Plump and Proud? US Study Suggests Black Women are Heavier But Happier

Our resident nutrition expert and lifestyle coach Angela Tella shares her thoughts on a new US study comparing attitudes and beliefs about weight, health and lifestyle in black and white women.

A new study from the United States has found that black women are heavier but happier with their bodies than white women. In the most comprehensive study till date, 66 per cent of overweight or obese black women had high self-esteem compared to 41 per cent of average-sized or thin white women. Looking good was also more important to black women with 28 per cent saying that being physically attractive is ‘very important,’ compared to 11 per cent of white women.

Healthy, West African & Wise™ Books and Seminar Go to Maryland, USA!

As an author and speaker in the field of nutrition and health, I enjoy engaging with people and facilitating ‘light bulb’ moments and so my latest engagement took me all the way to the USA (Silver Spring, Maryland to be precise)! I had a great time speaking to the Homebuilder’s Ministry, a married women’s group of Jesus House Washington DC.

At the seminar which took place on Monday, 18th of April 2011, I spoke on how to make healthy food choices for families, shared healthy cooking tips and also showed attendees how West African foods can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. We also had a great Q & A session which would have gone on for longer if the ladies had their way!

The response to both my books was amazing and the feedback from the seminar was great – I look forward to being back there soon.
